Rockin' the Lockin' returns: group to host online gig in aid of Teddington disability charity Ruils
Rockin' the Lockin' announced yesterday that they will RETURN for the November lockdown with an eight-hour online gigraising funds for Teddington disability charity RUILS.
The remote gig will take place on Saturday 28 November from 12.55 to 9.30pm on the group's YouTube channel.
Rockin' the Lockin' are a group of local musicians who performed both virtual and live socially distanced concerts during the months of the March lockdown and over the summer.
They played four concerts in total, with all raising money for a charity in the Richmond borough area.
On their Facebook page, Rockin' the Lockin' said the concert was 'another opportunity to enjoy fabulous music from our collective of musicians looking to support a charitable cause.'
Their aim is to raise £750 for RUILS, a charity based in Waldegrave Road which supports people of all ages who have disabilities.
Any money raised will go towards RUILS's Befriending Plus service, which was set up in March to support their clients who were isolated over lockdown.
Through the service a group of volunteers can call the person they are supporting every week for a friendly chat and to check if they need any support. So far, volunteers have made 3,600 calls.
On the event's donation page, the charity said: "many of our clients have been shielding, have been unable to get the provisions they need and have felt very isolated."
They added: "We are really grateful to receive this support from Rockin the Lockin and hope to raise £750 to help us keep our Befriending Plus service going until at least the end of March 2021."
Gareth Wax, the organiser of this month's Lockin' event, said that members of the group got in touch with him when the November lockdown was announced, to ask if they could do another concert.
He stressed that as well as helping RUILS, performers at the concert would reap their own benefits from playing.
He said: "We built ourselves a little community here. And if we want to come out of this the other side we all need to stay interconnected to our supporting bubble and our supporting friends."
Speaking about the show, he revealed that there will be 16 artists playing, including guitarists, soul singers and a rapper. The full list of acts will be released before the concert.
As usual, Mr Wax will be hosting the event and will also be playing as a percussionist with his electro swing band.
However, this is the first time he is organising the show.
He paid tribute to Lisa Wyborn, a property marketing manager from Teddington who had the original idea for Rockin' The Lockin' and oversaw the project up until recently.
Ms Wyborn, who is involved with community event Teddington Lights Up, was described as a 'force to be reckoned with.'
Mr Wax also thanked Michelle Luscombe, an open mic organiser, for helping out behind the scenes with streaming technology and sourcing artists for the show.
Ben Wallace, a designer who 'selflessly gives up his time to come up with excellent imagery' and Mathilda Heenan who has 'done great work with our videos' were also praised by Mr Wax for their contributions.
