Richmond councillor scoops national Innovator of the Year award

Richmond councillor, Cllr Alexander Ehmann, has won a major national award for his pioneering work to transform transport and improve air quality across the borough.

At the 16th annual LGIU & CCLA Cllr Awards on Tuesday night (18 November) at London's Guildhall, Councillor Ehmann was named Innovator of the Year – a category recognising bold, creative leadership in local government.

Councillor Alexander Ehmann, chair of Richmond Council's transport and air quality committee, said: "I'm honoured to receive this award – and I'd like to thank officers, community partners and residents for their unwavering commitment to our borough.

"Together, we've pushed forward ambitious ideas that put people first – from cleaner air to safer school journeys."

He added: "Innovation happens when communities and councils work side by side, and this recognition belongs to everyone who has helped shape a healthier, more sustainable future for Richmond."

Judges praised Cllr Ehmann for championing resident-led design in reshaping the borough's approach to transport through the Richmond 2040 Transport Strategy.

They also highlighted his development of an innovative new entry treatment for school streets, which is now being adopted by other London boroughs.

Leader of Richmond Council, Councillor Gareth Roberts, said: "This award is a testament to Councillor Ehmann's determination to deliver real, practical improvements for people across our borough.

"His work, alongside specialist officers, is helping to create a cleaner, safer and more accessible Richmond – and it's no surprise to see it recognised on the national stage."

First elected in 2014, Cllr Ehmann has led Richmond's transport and air quality agenda since 2018, driving forward work to deliver cleaner, safer and more accessible streets.

He also represents the borough on London Councils' Transport and Environment Committee and the LGA Neighbourhoods Policy Committee.

More than 400 nominations were submitted for this year's awards, with winners selected by a panel of senior councillors and sector leaders.
