#ResignNow – Twickenham and Richmond MPs demand Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak must go

Local MPs have joined the chorus of calls for the Prime Minister to resign after it emerged he broke the law on lockdown parties and misled Parliament.

The MPs for both Richmond and Twickenham argue that the position of both Boris Johnson and his Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, who has also been fined, is untenable.

At the same time, the leader of the Lib-Dems, Ed Davey, who is the MP for Kingston, called for resignations and a recall of Parliament.

The outcome of the police investigation and the imposition of fines is likely to have a strong effect on votes for the Conservative party ahead of local council elections on May 5.

Both Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak denied breaking the laws that they voted to impose on the population, which – given the decision by the police – cannot be true.

At one stage, Mr Johnson appeared to be arguing that he was unaware he was at a party.

At least one of the fines appears to be linked to a birthday party held for Mr Johnson in Downing Street, which was attended by the Chancellor.

The party was organised by his wife, Carrie, who has also been issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.

The Richmond MP, Sarah Olney, tweeted: "What other country or organisation would permit its leader to carry on in the face of law-breaking at this scale?

"The Prime Minister's last shred of credibility has surely vanished. It's time for Tory MPs to do the right thing and force him out of Number 10."

Sarah Olney MP said Conservative MPs 'cannot hide behind lame excuses any longer. It is time for them to sack Boris Johnson. No more ifs or buts'.

She said: "Whilst people in my constituency made heart-breaking sacrifices during lockdowns, Boris Johnson and his team were partying in Downing Street.

"We all have painful memories of that lockdown, from not being able to see dying relatives, to being separated for months on end from our friends and family.

"How on earth can Conservative MPs keep supporting a law-breaking Prime Minister and Chancellor? Our country needs leadership right now, not a Government in chaos."

Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said: "The country cannot have criminals and liars leading our Government, especially at a time of national and international crisis.

"Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak took the country's sacrifices for granted, while they broke the law to party in Downing Street. They are not fit to hold office. If they had a shred of decency, they would resign.

"Parliament should be recalled immediately so that MPs can hold a vote of no confidence. Conservative MPs must do their patriotic duty and kick these criminals out of Government once and for all."

The Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson, tweeted: "The two most senior lawmakers in the country have been found to be lawbreakers. Their position is utterly untenable. #ResignNow"

Families who lost loved ones during the pandemic and were unable to see family members in their final days – or attend funerals – have already condemned the behaviour of Mr Johnson.
