Plans for a brand-new pavilion structure inside Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Green, have been approved by the local council.
The popular tourist destination applied for permission to create a new structure and re-landscape a section of the gardens to form a new 'Carbon Cycle' garden.
The structure would be situated in the existing Secluded Garden and the council estimates that the project will cost around £2m.
A heritage statement, submitted as part of the application, stated: "Due to its scale and siting in a more secluded area, surrounded by trees and vegetation, the proposal would have a minimal impact on the WHS, Conservation Area and Registered Garden.
"The site is also generally well screened in long views from within the Gardens, in large part due to other surrounding taller buildings, including the Davies Alpine House and the Princess of Wales Conservatory.
"The Pavilion is an open structure with no walls, allowing daylight and sunlight to penetrate through the structure. Furthermore, the Pavilion is set into the landscape which reduces its overall height, and therefore its impact on any surrounding heritage assets.
"In addition, the sensitive design of the Pavilion and the improvements to landscaping will result in an improvement to the character of the Conservation Area and WHS and a minor heritage benefit. The materials proposed are sympathetic and in keeping with other structures at Kew Gardens, and reflect the natural environment."
