Richmond Council has written to households in and around Teddington who could benefit from increased monthly payments of up to £114.60 per week through the government's Attendance Allowance scheme.

Attendance Allowance is additional income that can be applied for when someone reaches State Pension Age and requires care or regular support.

It is available to everyone of pension age who has required support with their daily activities for at least six months. Any income or savings will not affect eligibility.

Councillor Jim Millard, Richmond Council's deputy leader and finance lead, said: "Older people with care needs should be supported with the extra costs involved.

"Attendance Allowance is one of many benefits that often goes unclaimed. We're writing to residents who may be eligible to encourage them to apply.

"This is one of the steps we're taking to support people who need care and those who look after them."

You are eligible for this extra money if the following conditions both apply:

  • You have a disability or illness, including mental and physical disabilities
  • Your condition means you need extra support or supervision for things like personal care, getting dressed and getting out of bed, during the day or at times during the night

You do not need to have someone caring for you in order to claim.

The allowance is paid at two different rates – depending on the level of care you need. The current rates are between £76.70 and £114.60 a week, which is payable every four weeks.

Those who qualify for the allowance may also be eligible for additional Pension Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction.

You can apply for Attendance Allowance by ringing the Department for Work and Pensions helpline on 0800 731 0122 to request a claim form. There is more information on how to claim Attendance Allowance on the government's website.

If you need help to apply, Age UK Richmond can offer free advice and support to ensure you are claiming all the benefits and other financial support you may be entitled to. Call 020 8878 3073 or email [email protected].
