A murder investigation is underway following a stabbing in Richmond on Monday night.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) to Lower Richmond Road, SW14, shortly before 10pm and a man, believed to be 34-years-of-age, was treated by paramedics at the scene for stab wounds before being taken to hospital.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the man died shortly after 10.30pm.

Richmond Police are continuing to identify and inform his next of kin and a crime scene has been put in place.

A 27-year-old woman was arrested close to the scene and remains in custody. Her and the man who has died are known to each other.

Homicide detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime investigate and enquiries into circumstances are ongoing.

Superintendent Roger Arditti from the South West Command Unit covering Richmond said: "I understand local residents will be shocked when they hear about this incident but I want to reassure them that a team of specially trained and experienced detectives are already working to establish the full circumstances.

"While an arrest has been made and detectives are already speaking to witnesses, I would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the murder and who saw anything they think could assist the investigation to please get in touch.

"You will also see local officers in and around the area; they are there to help and any residents who have concerns should approach them and speak to them."

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD8000/18Jul.

You are also able to provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Metropolitan Police's current investigation comes on the back of yesterday afternoon's awful incident in which a 14-year-old boy died after jumping into the Thames with friends in Hampton.
