Since its closure in 2017, Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson, has been fighting to have the Teddington Police station building repurposed.

On Monday, 14 October, Munira Wilson MP wrote to Met Police Commissioner, Sir Rowley about repurposing the Teddington Police Station building which closed down in 2017 and was consequently put up for sale in 2021.

In the letter, Wilson said that she, along with many local residents, is keen to see the building repurposed for community use, including a much-needed local GP surgery, or reopened to tackle crime in the area.

Wilson told Teddington Nub News: "I've fought for Teddington Police Station twice.

"First, I fought against its closure, and then, when it was put up for sale, I fought for the station to be repurposed for community use.

"We can't let this precious site in the heart of Teddington to continue to lie derelict, especially when it could be used for a much-need new GP surgery and affordable housing."

Munira Wilson MP has previously fought for the site to be repurposed.

For example, she launched a petition signed by over 2,100 residents.

And in February 2023, Wilson secured a huge win when the Government officially backed her amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill, which would allow the Mayor to sell disused police stations at a discount for community benefit.

Ministers have tabled an amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that is going through the House of Lords.

Speaking about her work in February 2023m Munira Wilson MP said: "'m absolutely thrilled that the Government has officially supported my proposal to change the law in order to allow the Mayor of London and other police authorities to sell disused police stations at a discount for community benefit.

"This is crucially important for Teddington Police Station, given that the Mayor has continually insisted that the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) is obliged to sell the site for maximum financial value.

"I have been backing a bid for a new home for Park Road GP surgery and desperately needed affordable housing – but their bid simply could not compete with luxury housing developers."

She continued: "Ministers have now tabled an amendment to the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that is going through the House of Lords."

Moreover, on 3 May 2022, Wilson  and Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, wrote to Sophie Linden calling on MOPAC to publish the legal advice.

On 8 June 2022, she also secured agreement from Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, that the LuRB Bill should include a provision that public sector owned assets can be sold below market value for social and community benefit.

On 6 September 2022, Wilson wrote to the Mayor of London asking him to back the amendment and, on 20 October, MP Tim Farron presented the amendment.

And on 13 December 2022, she secured a major breakthrough in her Teddington Police Station campaign when Ministers backed her amendment.
