Munira Wilson and Richmond Council pay respects following Teddington councillor's passing
Twickenham MP Munira Wilson and Richmond Council give heartfelt dedications following the passing of Cllr Martin Elengorn.
Councillor Elengorn represented Teddington ward continuously since he was first elected in 1982 until his passing yesterday, 9 November.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Ms Wilson said of Mr Elengorn: "Never afraid to speak his mind and ruffle a few feathers, I will especially miss his wicked sense of humour."
Ms Wilson commended his passion about climate change and its impact on children and young people.
She added: "I will always be grateful for his wisdom and expertise - not least his encyclopaedic knowledge of planning and elections- and his support for me personally, both as a fresh-faced councillor 17 years ago and more recently as MP."
Richmond Council, which Mr Elengorn served on for over 40 years, released a statement this afternoon
Council leader Cllr Gareth Roberts said:
"Cllr Elengorn was our longest continuous-serving member of the Council. His experience, passion, knowledge and likeability were the defining characteristics of his four decades of public service.
"Martin's tenure is a testament to the affection he had for this community. Whether in opposition or administration, whether as a back bencher, cabinet member or, more recently, the vice chair of the Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Committee, his influence resulted in major strides being made in enhancing our green credentials, a legacy which will benefit our borough for generations to come. Richmond upon Thames is undoubtedly a better place for the expertise he willingly dedicated to it.
"His loss will be felt keenly by all of us who worked closely with him and those he represented. I know I will miss his warm humour and friendship more than I can possibly say. On behalf of all councillors and council officers, our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
His expertise in planning and environment meant from 2006 – 2010 and again from 2018 - 2019, Councillor Elengorn was the Cabinet Member for Environment. He chaired the new Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Committee and was the Committee's vice-chair from 2020 to 2023.
He was a member of the Liberal Democrats.
