The flags over civic buildings in Richmond are flying at half-mast today and church bells will toll at noon to mark the passing of the Queen.

The Mayor of Richmond, Julia Cambridge, has issued a statement of condolence on behalf of the people of the borough.

Cllr Cambridge said: "As we learn of the sad news that Queen Elizabeth the Second has passed away, the thoughts of Richmond Council and the residents of Richmond upon Thames are with the Royal Family at this time.

"The Queen has been a constant and reassuring figure in the lives of the British people. Through decades of rule from her ascendancy to the throne in 1952 and throughout her seventy-year rule, the Queen's lasting presence and commitment to the nation and its people, has provided reassurance for so many.

"Queen Elizabeth's devotion to her family and this country has been a true inspiration. Her work as the longest reigning monarch has had a huge impact on the lives of so many and what she has achieved has been extraordinary.

"She will be remembered for her service, devotion, and dedication to the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."

In accordance with protocols the Union Flags that fly above York House and the Civic Centre have been lowered to half-mast.

Information about how residents can pay their respects will be given once details are confirmed.
