A PROJECT to turn a 150-year-old church in Teddington into 6 luxury flats is nearing completion, with homes now on the market for £1.7 million.

Christ Church on Station Road was built between 1870 and 1873, making it one of the first modern parish churches to be built in Teddington.

Work to convert the building into a gated development of modern 2-bedroom apartments - four split-level maisonettes and flats on the second and third floors - has been ongoing since 2017.

The church was bought on the open market in 2015 after falling into disrepair.

The estimated million-pound repairs were too expensive for the small congregation to pay for - but the church couldn't be knocked down as it fell within a recently extended high street conservation area.

No insurance would be granted for the dilapidated building, preventing it from being used by the community unless there was money to pay for the extensive repairs.

The author of a planning application that same year stated that it "will involve significant capital investment to save the architectural integrity of the existing church building."

"And in doing so, it can only be done by a land use that will generate sufficient capital receipts, namely a residential conversion," they added.

Now the first photos of the conversion have been released, showing that the architects have kept much of the church's historic features.

These include stained-glass windows and an extended original tower now with a lift to the third floor.

Modern touches include a sleek grey-painted kitchen, Lime Stone Flooring and an air exchange system.

But at £1.7 million per apartment, the cost of buying a home in an historic church is far more than the already eye-watering property prices in Teddington.

The price tag is twice the town's average property price of £835,690 according to Rightmove, and more than three times the amount usually paid for a Teddington flat.
