Twickenham and Teddington MP Munira Wilson has urged the Environment Secretary to visit campaigners opposing Thames Water's controversial sewage recycling project at Teddington Lock.

Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 3 June, Ms Wilson said Thames Water is "teetering on the brink" while continuing to pursue what she described as a questionable scheme that could impact her constituents.

The project proposes to take treated sewage from Mogden Sewage Treatment Works and pump it into the River Thames above Teddington Lock—a plan that has sparked local opposition over environmental and public health concerns.

Ms Wilson highlighted that Thames Water is pressing ahead with spending "hundreds of millions of pounds" on the proposal, despite financial uncertainty and rising bills for customers.

She said: "Investors are running for the hills and my constituents are paying the price for their mismanagement through soaring bills.

"All the while, Thames Water is spending hundreds of millions of pounds on a proposed sewage recycling project at Teddington Lock in my constituency, which will at best be used every two years—and, some cynics suggest, is designed entirely to boost their balance sheet."

Ms Wilson also reminded the Secretary of State of a previous commitment he had made to her constituent, Ian McNuff, to visit the site and assess the impact of the proposal.

She added: "Could I ask him to reiterate that commitment today? I, along with my honourable friend and neighbour, the Member for Richmond Park, would be delighted to welcome him here."

In response, the Environment Secretary said he would be "very happy to come and visit if my diary allows," and assured Ms Wilson that, if not, he would ensure a meeting is arranged with the Water Minister to discuss her concerns further.
