Hampton Wick Royal Cricket Club (HWRCC) has launched an urgent crowdfunding campaign to "Return Sport to The Wick" after a fire destroyed its pavilion.

On 7 September the club was alerted the HWRCC has been destroyed in a "catastrophic" fire.

The HWRCC chairman said in a statement: "It's been a tough week, but the reaction from the cricketing community – and sport as a whole – has been humbling.

"Young kids have donated their weekly pocket money, members of clubs around the UK have dug deep...big organisations, cricketing neighbours, and friends have shared advice and our fundraising links."

The club expressed its gratitude for all the donations and support, but stressed it needed further help to get back up and running to provide facilities for the teams and community groups whose home is The Wick.

As well as HWRCC, the ground is home to Harlequins Amateurs rugby, Bedfont Sports FC, Kingston College Football Academy and other community groups.

The club said it is too soon to tell what the insurance pay out will be, but it understands it will not cover everything needed.

HWRCC has clear shortfalls and immediate cashflow is needed.

The club hopes to get all sport back on at the site as soon as possible, with temporary changing rooms for both men and women as well as toilets with running water. These facilities are not covered by insurance.

Members of the community are also taking the initiative to fundraise for the club.

Sabine, Elin and Lucy, the wives and mums of passionate Club members, are walking 18.63km from the Oval to the Wick today (19 September) to raise funds.

Ian Collier is also running the Suffolk Coastal Marathon in October to fundraise for the club.
