Hampton could get extra bus stops to tackle transport inequality

An outer London council is set to lobby Transport for London for more bus stops along a Superloop route, as it only has one pair in the whole borough.
Richmond Council, which has long campaigned for public transport improvements in the borough, wants TfL to introduce extra stops in Hampton and Hampton Hill along the SL7 route, which runs between West Croydon and Heathrow Central bus stations serving five outer London boroughs.
Richmond's only pair of bus stops along the route is on Broad Street, in Teddington.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) understands TfL currently has no plans to introduce extra stops on the route in Hampton or Hampton Hill.
A new report by council officers said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan aims to increase trips taken by sustainable modes in Richmond to 75 per cent by 2041, but the speed of buses continues to decline across London – making them less attractive to use.
It said the council plans to use £50,000 of TfL grants to draw up proposals to improve bus services across Richmond and the accessibility of the SL7 route, which it hopes would shorten bus journey times and increase reliability.
This involves proposals to introduce more waiting and loading restrictions on Uxbridge Road and Park Road and widen a bus stop on Ferry Road along the SL7 route, along with banning turns at the junction of Hampton Hill High Street, Hampton Road and Park Road to slash congestion.
The report said: "Schemes such as bus and cycle-only streets, bus lanes and kerb-side restrictions also provide benefits to other road users and the environment more widely.
"The opportunity will be taken to identify accessibility improvements to route SL7 bus stops, with improvements introduced using other funding streams."
It added: "The improvement of bus and rail services will help address transport inequality across the borough and support those dependent on bus services and lower income households."
Richmond's Transport Committee will decide on moving ahead with the plans on November 9.
The proposals would need further agreement and funding to go ahead after being designed.
A TfL spokesperson said: "We are committed to providing a comprehensive, reliable bus service across the breadth of London and keep the network under constant review to ensure we invest our resources where they are needed most.
"We continue to monitor and review all Superloop routes to get a full understanding of how customers are using the network, working with local councils, to improve the bus network across the capital."
Richmond has long been considered a borough with poor transport connectivity compared with other parts of the capital.
The borough has only two stops on the London Underground with both Richmond and Kew Gardens stations sitting on the District line.
These two stations are also on the Overground's Mildmay line, marking the only points the London Overground enters the borough.
