Green light for new astroturf pitch at sports centre

By James Smith 30th Jul 2025

Council planners have given the green light for an artificial sports pitch to be upgraded.

St Mary's University has been given the go-ahead of the upgrade at Teddington Lock Sports Campus.

The scheme will see an existing 2G 'sand surface' pitch at the Broom Road sight upgraded to a 3G/4G/5G astroturf surface.

Plans were signed off by Richmond Council this July.

In its application to the council, the university said: "The proposed development is seeking to change the astroturf from a 2G sand surface to a more universal 3G/4G/5G surface to improve the university's sports pitch provisions.

"The existing 2G and replacement, upgraded, surfaces are set on an existing hard standing base.

"For this reason, the works described can be considered as permitted development."
