A Grade II listed building in Hampton Wick is set to get new windows and a new garden door.

Richmond Council has approved a planning application for the replacement of six wooden sash windows and one wooden garden door with wooden double-glazed equivalents at Flat 2 of The Grove building on Lower Teddington Road.

The Grove is located within a Victorian wing of the house, which was itself later extended in the twentieth century.

As a later addition to the Georgian house, the application site makes a lesser contribution to the listed building's special interest, but adds interest as part of its evolution, first built as a billiard room before being converted to residential use in the mid-twentieth century and later extended to the side, to the rear with a conservatory and with an attic conversion.

In a planning document, the applicant, Edward Corbett, said: "Flat 2 the Grove was originally a snooker room built on to the main house c.1840. After the war, the Grove was divided into five flats. "Flat 2 was extended over time and achieved its present size and shape in the 1980s. It is Grade II.

"The existing single-glazed windows and door are rotten and have repeatedly been repaired. The lower parts are now more filler than wood. Replacement with like-for-like wooden sash windows and door is now necessary.

"The appearance of the windows and doors will be very similar, the only difference being the millimetric differences in dimensions due to the double-glazing."

He continued: "Four of the windows and the door are at the rear of the house and as such are clearly visible from Canbury Gardens across the Thames. From there the replacement windows will look exactly like the old ones but freshly painted.

"The other two windows are at the Southern end of the building and are not visible from anywhere being screened by the fence, trees and bushes.

"Access will be unaffected by the works."
