Ugh.

I think that is how the whole town feels right now.

Christmas has been, for lack of better words, cancelled.

Just a week ago we were being put in Tier Three restrictions but now we have unlocked a whole new tier - Tier Four.

This means no household mixing - even on Christmas Day.

Christmas will be a very different affair for me this year.

While my family only live in Woking that of course is also a Tier Four area (being in Surrey) so for the first time I will not be able to see them on the big day.

Luckily I live with my girlfriend so I appreciate it could be a lot worse however she too will have not seen her family in months.

This year has simply been the worst. As Financial Times Chief Political Reporter Jim Pickard said: "The Queen must regret she's used up the phrase annus horribilis."

So let's turn up the Buble and look at some of the positives of this Christmas before we drown in self-pity.

  1. I will be having more pigs in blankets than ever before. I bought 12 yesterday and with my girlfriend being a vegetarian this will mean an excellent Christmas dinner haul for me.
  1. We're hosting a Christmas Quiz. Despite being just the two of us I'll probably be speaking to more people than ever on Christmas Day thanks to setting up a quiz that we are trying to get everyone we know to join.
  1. You still get presents. Even though yes not seeing anyone is a huge blow you still get presents - and right now we can all do with a gift.
  1. The weather is set to be nice. While cold, Christmas Day will be sunny - a perfect winter's day. It should be a very pleasant occasion for a stroll around Bushy Park.
  1. Plenty of alcohol. I don't even like champagne but I've bought a bottle. If there's ever a year to go slightly over the top with the booze it is this one!

So wherever you are spending Christmas and if you are lucky enough to be with anyone then there's never been a better time to appreciate them.
