England World Cup fans remember Reece Newcombe

England fans attending the World Cup in Qatar have been paying tribute to young father, Reece Newcombe, who died following an attack in Richmond.

Reece was a huge football fan, who followed both Chelsea and England, and a flag made by supporters was displayed in the Al Bayt Stadium during England's 3-0 win against Senegal.

It read: 'Football is coming home in memory of Reece.'

The England and Chelsea badges were displayed on the flag with a pair of boxing gloves and a photo of Mr Newcombe, who was a boxer himself in his youth and well known across the borough.

Over 2,000 people took part in a memorial walk through Richmond on Sunday to mark Reece's death and support his family, including baby daughter, Misse.

Civil servant Garford Beck, 60, who lives in London, and Mark Trigg, 48, a chef from Derby, were among those to ensure the flag was in the stadium on Sunday.

Mr Beck said he was asked by a friend of the family to create the flag.

He said: "It's just another shocking statistic in London unfortunately."

He added: "We got it on the TV for them and hopefully it brings a bit of comfort to the family. It's very difficult to imagine the grief they're going through."

Reece worked with his father, John Holland, and grandfather, Harry, to help train former footballer and TV pundit, Ian Wright, who is covering the World Cup in Qatar, for a charity boxing bout.

Mr Beck said he would send photographs back to the UK, adding: "I think things like that can help and if it does that's all well and good and it shows there are more important things in life than football."
