"Whether male or female, young or old, self-defence training can prevent injury and boost confidence," said Kevin Hyde, a former Metropolitan police officer who taught self-defence and was a first aid trainer for the police.

Hyde has created a two-hour session covering self-defence techniques, legal implications and conflict de-escalation.

Held at the Twickenham Sea Cadets, Fairways off Broom Road, Teddington, the session costs £50 per person. The first of these will take place on Friday, 15 May at 7pm.

Hyde said: "Many people feel unsafe in their surroundings. I have developed these sessions to help improve and build their confidence in defending themselves where necessary."

"Anyone interested in attending on May 15 and in any future sessions should contact me at [email protected]."

With the closure of the last remaining 24/hr police counter in Richmond borough, Hyde thinks his classes will help people to feel safe.
