A new information board has been installed at the Garden of Sanctuary in Richmond, helping visitors learn more about the borough's longstanding commitment to supporting people seeking sanctuary.

The board was unveiled during Refugee Week, as Richmond marked the second anniversary of becoming a Borough of Sanctuary.

It was unveiled by Councillor Nancy Baldwin, Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, and Councillor Fiona Sacks Borough of Sanctuary Champion, alongside local councillors, members of the Richmond Sanctuary Board, refugee and community organisations during Refugee Week.

Guests were welcomed with traditional Ukrainian music performed by Ukrainian Iryna Rodionova.

Councillor Nancy Baldwin, Mayor of Richmond, said: "Refugee Week is a chance to pause and recognise the courage, culture and contribution of people seeking sanctuary, and to celebrate the compassion shown by communities across Richmond upon Thames.

"The Garden of Sanctuary and this new display board reminds us that welcome is not just part of our history, it is something we continue to offer to people rebuilding their lives here today."

Councillor Fiona Sacks, Borough of Sanctuary Champion, added: "This information board gives visitors a clearer understanding of why Warren Gardens is such a fitting place to reflect on Richmond's connection with people seeking sanctuary.

"By sharing these stories in a public space, we can help more people understand the experiences of refugees and sanctuary seekers, why people become displaced and the importance of making sure everyone feels they belong."

Last summer, Warren Gardens was officially named a Garden of Sanctuary, with a York stone installed marking the dedication with the words, 'Garden of Sanctuary - Here You Will Find Welcome'.

Created as a calm and welcoming place for reflection, the Garden of Sanctuary is already home to a memorial commemorating Belgian refugees and now includes the new information board recognising the Garden's significance for all sanctuary seekers refugees in Richmond.

The unveiling is part of a series of events across the borough from 15 to 21 June for Refugee Week including a celebration evening at York House which will take place on Thursday, 18 June where all are welcome to come together for an evening of food, performances and music.

Refugee Week is the world's largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, courage, culture and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.
