The Teddington ward neighbourhood police team used social media to issue a warning about the scammers.

They said people should try to maintain their personal space if a stranger approaches them at a payment machine.

The scam is operating in car parks across Richmond borough, the police said.

"We have had number of scams in Teddington and Richmond Borough regarding using credit/debit card payment at parking machines," the police said on Twitter.

"Please be careful. If approached by stranger, DO NOT give up your personal space. Stay alert at all times."
