Council considers council tax increases to clamp down on empty homes in Teddington
Richmond Council is asking locals to have their say on changes to council tax which could see second homes and empty properties taxed more.
The local authority is considering doubling the rate of council tax for properties which are left unoccupied and unfurnished for more than a year.
This would also apply to properties deemed as second homes.
"Empty and second homes can impact local communities by contributing to housing supply pressures and reducing the desirability of areas," the local authority said.
"We want to bring these homes back into use to alleviate these issues."
Changes would come into effect from April 2025.
Currently these extra charges apply after two years of vacancy.
Locals have until Wednesday 18 December to respond to a consultation on the plans.
The council added: "We want to hear from residents, businesses and stakeholders about the proposed exceptions to these premiums.
"We would like to know in what circumstances, and for what length of time, you think there should be exceptions to the new premiums. Your feedback will help shape the final policy."
