By Tilly O'Brien 7th Apr 2026
Penny Theatre, a new theatre company based in Hampton, is seeking actors and singers to take part in its upcoming production of The Hired Man by Howard Goodall and Melvyn Bragg, to be staged at St James's Church in Hampton Hill this coming November.
The musical, which many critics have hailed as "one of Britain's finest", tells the "stirring, everyman" story of the Tallentire family, across an epic period of British history - from the end of the 19th Century to the aftermath of the Great War.
Luck Penny's director, Nigel Cole said: "The Hired Man's soaring choral and folk melodies have carved it a unique place in the musical theatre landscape.
"We're excited to find a talented cast to bring it to life in such a beautiful venue – and are especially keen to hear from young actors/singers with baritone or tenor voices."

The theatre company will be hosting a variety of casting call events at the church this month, including a launch night on Monday, 13 April at 7.30pm, workshops on Wednesday, 15 April and Monday, 20 April at 7.30pm, and auditions on Saturday, 25 April at 2pm.
Luck Penny Theatre's director is Nigel Cole, its musical director is Nic Luker, and its choreographer is Gita Singham-Willis.
This trio of Hampton-based creatives aim to produce "powerful and compelling theatre, that's wowed audiences, critics and awards-juries for over a decade".
