The borough's two MPs – Munira Wilson and Sarah Olney – have both been re-selected to fight their seats at the General Election, which is expected next year.

The two Lib-Dem MPs have senior roles in the national party at Westminster, while they have also worked tirelessly to represent the borough in the House of Commons.

Munira Wilson, the Twickenham MP, who also represents Teddington residents within her constituency, leads on Education for the party and has also played a significant role in highlighting the lack of mental health services for the young.

Locally, she has championed efforts to ensure Teddington Police Station is retained for community use and promoted the need for action on a lack of NHS dentists.

Recently, the MP has repeatedly pressed ministers for justice for a mother and her five – British citizen - children, who are stranded in Afghanistan and desperate for refuge in the UK.

Sarah Olney, who represents Richmond Park, speaks on Treasury, Business and Industrial Strategy.

Locally, she has been at the forefront of a campaign calling for the re-opening of a police station in Richmond town centre against the background of rising concerns about crime and antisocial behaviour.

She has also challenged the government on the need to provide the funds needed to restore Hammersmith Bridge and re-open this crucial route across the Thames.

Both MPs have raised consumer concerns about plans by Thames Water to pump treated effluent into the Thames upstream of Teddington Lock, which – it is feared – will harm river life.

Speaking about her reselection, Munira Wilson said: "I am honoured to be unanimously reselected by Twickenham Lib-Dems members to stand again as their candidate for Twickenham at the next election.

"It's been a privilege to serve my community and my country as Whitton's Woman in Westminster."

She added: "Let's win Twickenham, rip down the Blue Wall and deliver the fair deal for Britain that our country so desperately needs.

"The Tories have let down our nation during a time of national crisis, severing our ties with Europe, engaging in internal warfare, and leaving the economy in tatters."

Sarah Olney said: "It has been a privilege to have served as the MP for the fantastic constituency of Richmond Park over the last few years, and I look forward to campaigning to be re-elected to do so again.

"I am proud to have worked hard to help make strong progress on local issues such as re-opening Hammersmith Bridge, preventing a third runway at Heathrow and holding water companies accountable for pumping sewage into our rivers, and should I be re-elected, I pledge to continue in this work.

"For too long, my constituents have suffered under the incompetence and sleaze of this Conservative Government. The next General Election will give voters across not only Richmond Park, but around the country to send them a message that enough is enough."
