The Telegraph has named the borough of Richmond upon Thames one of the best places in the UK to retire in 2024.

They've compiled the list by looking at areas across the UK comparing their crime levels, number of hospitals, GPs, shops, and green spaces to choose the top ten.

Exeter in Devon came in as the number one spot, followed by Merton and then Richmond in place number three.

The article said: "Richmond covers an area of 5,000 hectares, 57pc of which is classified as open space (this includes Richmond Park and Kew Gardens).

"It's the only borough to span both sides of the River Thames and has 21 miles of river frontage.

"It has the lowest rate of recorded crime in the top 10 list of retirement locations.

"Average property values are higher than in Merton by £200,000 but it ranks as the best location for travel time to the town centre."

Richmond was also named the happiest place to live in Great Britain in December, according to Rightmove's 'happy at home index'..

The other places in London named as some of the best places to retire in London are:

  • Merton, south-west London
  • Sutton, south-west London
  • Bromley, south-east London
  • Kingston-upon-Thames, south-west London
  • Westminster, central London
