Betty Boothroyd's jacket and shoes up for grabs in Teddington auction this weekend

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 5th Nov 2021

A jacket and shoes belonging to Baroness Betty Boothroyd will be up for auction in Teddington this weekend.

The black blazer and court shoes estimated to be worth £2,000 will be up for grabs on the Hansons London website on Saturday 25 September.

An amazing 70 items belonging to Baroness Boothroyd - the UK's first and only female Lord Speaker of the House of Commons in history - went on sale in Teddington earlier this year.

Baroness Boothroyd, who was Labour MP for West Bromwich during her Parliamentary career, put up her collection of rare and historic objects up for grabs in April 2021 as she downsized from her London apartment.

Now this Saturday Teddington residents can again bid for the belongings of the popular Baroness.

First up is her single-breasted black jacket, which was made by the oldest tailor in London and is estimated to be worth £1,000-£2,000.

Second on the list are her size 5 Tiffany of London court shoes which are expected to fetch £200-£300.

But the prices could soar beyond this as the April auction saw Boothroyd's 'treasures' go for far beyond what was expected.

For example her 20th century Papier-mâché box - a gift from Russian president Boris Yeltsin - sold for £2,400, 48 times its £50 estimate.

Commenting on Saturday's auction, Chris Kirkham, associate director of Hansons London, said: "Baroness Boothroyd is a national treasure and she wore these items when she was Madam Speaker, which makes them part of Britain's political history.

"She served as speaker from 1992 to 2000 and built a formidable reputation for her ability to keep order."

He added: "She is a wonderful lady and always makes me smile.

"She told me any money raised from the sale of the Madam Speaker shoes and jacket would go towards a new garage door."

Hansons of London are a UK auctioneers who have their offices at the magnificent Grade II listed Normansfield theatre in Langdon Park.

Saturday's auction is online-only due to covid restrictions and can be accessed HERE

Baroness Boothroyd's jacket is lot 17 and the shoes are lot 18.
