An unexploded hand grenade was found in Teddington yesterday afternoon.

The weapon was discovered on Watts Lane, a side street off Teddington high street, at around 2pm.

Police cars, an ambulance and two fire engines from Twickenham and Kingston were called to the scene.

A number of local residents were evacuated as a precaution and roads were closed to traffic.

The incident was stood down at 3.20pm.

According to witnesses, the grenade was found during building work at one of the houses on Watts Lane.

A resident of a neighbouring house told Nub News that police instructed them to stay indoors and avoid windows for the duration of the incident.

Another witness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said they were in the queue for Teddington post office when the emergency vehicles turned up.

"We overheard that a hand grenade had been found under a floorboard," they said.

"I think the issue was whether it was live or not.

"The side street was cordoned off and there was talk of cordoning off part of the high street but that didn't happen.

"Fortunately it didn't turn into a major incident."

Last week a road in Twickenham was closed due to reports of an explosive device being found.
