Council leader pleads for U-turn to save Park Lane Stables

Richmond Council leader Gareth Roberts is calling on the landowner of Park Lane Stables , which supports hundreds of young disabled riders and horse lovers, to let the charity stay at their current premises in Teddington.

The Council leader has joined MP Munira Wilson, celebrities and community groups in supporting a campaign to ensure the charity run stables remain on the site , following yesterday's shock news that their bid to buy the land has been rejected by the landowner.

Roberts said: "This is really sad news for Park Lane Stables and devastating for the staff, volunteers and families, many with vulnerable children, that rely on the stables.

"Their fundraising plight received national coverage and support.

"And I know that there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of people angry that despite their efforts, it wasn't enough to secure the long-term future of the stables on the site in Teddington.

"People will feel cheated.

"I hope the Landlord will recognise the strength of local feeling, recognise the importance the work done by Park Lane Stables, particularly in supporting Riding for the Disabled, and honour the original ask."

Earlier this year, the Council supported the local stables' publicity campaign to fundraise the £1m needed to purchase their premises, following an announcement by the landowner that they intended to sell the site.

Despite the success of their campaign, the popular charity will now have to quit their home after negotiations failed with the landowner .

The team are now drawing up plans to move to a temporary site in Petersham two miles away as early as next week.

Nub News will continue to bring you updates on this story as they happen.
